Title – INVITATION TO SCANDAL
Publisher – Kensington Brava
Release date – 1 May 2012

What do you think the readers will like about INVITATION TO SCANDAL?
Hi Kylie, thanks for having me over to blog today. I’ve just about finished Vengeance Born. It will almost be a disappointment to come to the end. But I digress. :-)

I hope readers will love INVITATION TO SCANDAL because they can relate to the internal struggle my hero, Rufus Knight, Viscount Strathmore faces. Rufus is all about honor and clearing his father of treason. He lives his life trying to atone for the sins of his father. He puts honor before everything else. He has to live his life this way because Society would crush him, his mother and sister, if he did not. However, my heroine, Rheda Kerrick, teaches him that sometimes doing the honorable thing leads only to pain and suffering. Sometimes a little naughtiness can do a world of good.

Imagine the gut-wrenching position Rufus is put in when he learns that he can clear his father’s name, but only by destroying the woman he loves! It’s the old catch twenty-two – love or honor.

What themes or tropes appear in INVITATION TO SCANDAL?
Good versus evil. Honor versus what’s right. Self-sacrifice for those you love.

INVITATION TO SCANDAL
Her secrets are coming undone...

Plagued by scandalous rumors, Rheda Kerrich will stop at nothing to restore her reputation and make an honest living for herself-and she's determined to do it without a husband. But times are hard, and smuggling is a risky though profitable trade. So when a dashing agent for the English government catches her in the act, she desperately resists his charms and conceals her illicit profession. Until she realizes he may be the key to her ultimate freedom-and unbridled passion.

Rufus Knight, Viscount Strathmore, has never had trouble beguiling the ladies of Kent. When his search for "Dark Shadow," a cunningly elusive smuggler, leads him to alluring and headstrong Rhe, her objections to his amorous advances merely incite a tantalizing game of cat and mouse. Soon, they'll find the very secrets driving them apart could ensnare them in a love they can't escape…

Excerpt
The thundering hooves focused her back on the problem at hand. Horse and rider appeared around the bend. The horse was galloping so fast she wondered if its accomplished rider would see her. Her heart missed a beat. The man wasn't Daniel. Daniel didn’t own, nor could he afford, a magnificent beast such as this.
Please, she prayed, let him fly past without noticing me.
Like every other aspect of her day, she was denied her wish. The rider pulled on the reins, and the powerful steed came to a sliding halt in the middle of the road, gravel spraying through the air.
Her shoulders drooped. “Perfect,” she uttered to no one but herself.
The stallion pranced on the road in tune to the pounding surf, its owner stroking its neck with a large gloved hand. He took in her situation and seemed to whisper something in his horse’s ear. Rheda licked her lips nervously. Would he be friend or foe?
The pair trotted across the field in her direction and halted in front of her.
“Are you in need of assistance?” His voice was velvety smooth, yet commanding.
She saw two dark eyes rimmed with lovely long eyelashes, and a wide soft mouth. With a mouth that soft he would be very responsive. She might even be able to control him. The stallion before her was impressive. He would make a fine mate for her mare, Desert Rose.
“He won’t bite,” the man added, misinterpreting her interest in his horse as fear.
With some reluctance she lifted her gaze to the owner of such a beautiful piece of horseflesh. Her heart tumbled in her chest, flipping and flopping as if caught in the thundering surf behind her.
Beautiful.
She shook her head. The word applied equally to the stallion’s rider. She had never seen such an arresting man. Her pulse hitched as she drank him in, the pain from the barrel momentarily forgotten. When she reached his dark eyes she shivered. He had a look of danger about him.
His eyes were almost the same color as his horse’s glossy coat, a luminous rich brown. His breeze-swept chestnut hair was fashionably cut and softened the hard planes of his handsome face. His countenance screamed he was a man not to be messed with.
Like his regal mount when he sought his mares, this man could mesmerize any female he chose to conquer—she was sure of it.
Rheda tried to move her foot so the pain would distract her from the knowledge that this man’s beauty disturbed her more than it should.
To hide her reaction to him she bit out a reply. “Of course I need some help."

What was the inspiration behind your INVITATION series?
I love tortured heroes. Men who seem to have everything but in reality are missing the one thing that would make them whole—LOVE. So the series is about four friends (two brothers) who have had terrible events in their lives which they must overcome. Needless to say it’s the heroines who help them through their journey and who complement them.

I had to match these magnificent men with pretty special heroines. That was fun too. They are woman who are perhaps a little ahead of their time, but who we can all relate to. Strong, intelligent and independent, but full of compassion, warmth and love.

Will readers see more books in this series?
Rufus’s story, INVITATION TO SCANDAL, is book two in the series, so there are two more books to go. INVITATION TO PASSION is Richard Craven’s story. He is the twin brother of Anthony Craven,  my hero in book one, INVITATION TO RUIN.

Richard’s book will be released early 2013. I’ve paired Richard with Rufus’s sister, Madeline. The story is very poignant as tells the tale of their deep friendship and the how they find themselves, through a misunderstanding, married. The journey from friends to lovers is a rocky one.

Then late 2013 will be, INVITATION TO LOVE, Alexander Montford’s story which is also introduced in INVITATION TO SCANDAL.

What other new projects are you working on?
I’ve written a Regency novella trilogy called, Wicked Wagers. Book one, To Dare the Duke of Dangerfield got to #3 in the Amazon Best-Sellers list Regency, and I’ve just released book two, To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone, and I’m busy finishing book three, To Challenge the Earl of Cravenswood – August 2012.

I also have a contemporary category romance called The Reluctant Wife coming out with Entangled Publishing in fall 2012. This is a new direction for me and I’m very excited. I’ll still be writing dark, tortured heroes though.

GUEST AUTHOR: Bronwen Evans

Today I welcome a good friend back to my blog.

New Zealander BRONWEN EVANS loves story-telling – gobbling up movies, books and theatre. Her head is always filled with characters and stories, particularly lovers in angst.

In 2006, encouraged by a close friend battling a deliberating illness, Bronwen finally started down the path to publication by joining RWA, The Beau Monde, RWAustralia and RWNZ.

Bronwen’s first manuscript, INVITATION TO RUIN, was completed late 2009 and was sold by her agent, Melissa Jeglinski of The Knight Agency, to Kensington Publishing early 2010, in a two book deal.

Her debut novel, INVITATION TO RUIN, received a 4.5 star rating from RT Book Reviews and was well received in Publishers Weekly - "Evans's debut Regency is filled with sizzling romance... Strong characterizations, smooth plotting, and plenty of explicit sex will appeal to fans of modern Regencies." (Mar.)

Bron, it's great to have you here. I'm looking forward to finding out what you've been doing since the release of INVITATION TO RUIN - share all the deets!

Hi everyone!

I’m excited to be blogging with my friend, Kylie. She was the first friendly face I met at the RWNZ 2006 conference which started me down the path to becoming an author. I was in awe of her at the time (still am for that matter), for her chest, arms, and just about every other part of her body was covered in writing contest winning ribbons. I thought immediately ‘how do I get one’?

I’ve popped over from New Zealand to introduce you to my sexy, Regency historical, INVITATION TO RUIN, my debut book with Kensington Brava. I’ve exciting news too - Invitation to Ruin is one of the nominees in the RT Reviewer’s Choice, Best First Historical 2011.

Title – INVITATION TO RUIN.
Setting – London, England 1808.
Hero – Anthony James Craven, Earl of Wickham.
Heroine – Miss Melissa Goodly.

Scene you would never cut...
There is a beautiful scene in the book where the hero, Anthony, who believes he is unsuitable for fatherhood, realizes he doesn’t need to fear becoming a father. He learns he would make a great parent and that he’d love and protect his child.

Something your hero or heroine would never do or say...
Melissa would never say ‘I give up’. She believes in fighting for what she wants, and for what is right. She’s a member of the Women’s Freedom League who buys slaves their freedom.

What's one quirky thing about your hero/heroine?
Melissa had elderly parents and no sisters, so she doesn’t know much about ‘married relations’- aka sex. She is not a sit back in ignorance type of woman, so she finds a ‘relationship’ journal written by Madam du Barry, the very successful mistress of the last King of France. Needless to say Anthony had little chance resisting her when she sets out to seduce him.

What do you think the readers will like about this book?
Anthony is a much wounded man and Melissa is a very resilient character. I hope readers like how these two prove they are strong enough to confront their fears, and that they understand how, with the love they receive from each other, they can begin to heal their internal wounds.

I’d like readers to think about how the events of our pasts shape what we are now, and how we have to learn to forgive ourselves and each other.

INVITATION TO RUIN
One Good Lady is About to Go Bad...

The only thing Miss Melissa Goodly has ever wanted out of a marriage is love. But any hope of that dissolves one wild night, when she loses herself in the arms of the most irresistible-and unobtainable-man in all of England. For when they are discovered in a position as compromising as it is pleasurable, she has no choice but to accept his proposal.

Avowed bachelor Anthony Craven, Earl of Wickham, never meant to seduce an innocent like Melissa. Yet now that the damage is done, it does seem like she'd make a very convenient wife. After all, she is so naive he won't have to worry about ever being tempted. Or so he thinks, until the vows are spoken and they are left alone-and his new bride reveals a streak just as brazen and unrestrained as his own...

What's next for you?
Book #2 in this series, INVITATION TO SCANDAL, is due out in April 2012 and I’m hoping Kensington pick up my option for book 3 and 4 in this series. Until then I’m working on a new Regency series for my agent.

About you...
Favorite movie of all time – Anything with Hugh Jackman in it! Australia is one of my all time faves.

Favorite fairytale – Cinderella.

Favorite story to disappear into – Any historical, or paranormal, or an alpha type hero contemporary. Currently I love all Jennifer Ashley’s historical books – especially The Many Sins of Lord Cameron.

Favorite TV program – At the moment I watch The Mentalist, Bones, Downton Abby and Game of Thrones. I also love The Vampire Diaries but it’s not on in NZ at the moment.

First book you remember reading – Either one of the Enid Blyton, Famous Five or CS. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I loved anything that fed my imagination.

Dog or cat person (or other) – Dog, although allergic to fur of any kind. I can manage dogs like poodles that have wool coats.

Author (living or dead) you'd most like to meet – Barbara Cartland because she was so eccentric. She seemed to be the consummate romance writer. Plus, I love pink!

A romantic retreat for you would be... A night or day or five minutes with Hugh Jackman!

What do you do to unwind or relax? Read or watch TV.

What era would you like to time travel and visit? And why?
The Regency period as that is what I write about, but I’d hate to have lived in those times, especially if I was not an aristocrat.

What does love mean to you?
Finding your soul mate, being best friends and letting love take care of the rest.

Now for the really fun bit - Bron has a book to giveaway!

Tell her what love means to you and one lucky commenter will win a copy of INVITATION TO RUIN.

REVIEW: Invitation to Ruin (historical romance)

Most of my friends know I love, live and breathe paranormal romance. My bookshelves are full of series and favourite authors who write in this genre - Nalini Singh, Larissa Ione, Joss Ware, Jacqueline Frank, Angela Knight, J.R.Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Joey W.Hill, Denise Rossetti...the list goes on and on...

So, when I tell you I can count the number of historical romance authors I've read and enjoyed on one hand, you'll understand why I'm posting a review about this debut author's book.

I read Bronwen Evans' debut historical romance, INVITATION TO RUIN, in a day. I'd only intended reading a few chapters during my lunch break, but I ended up reading it well into the afternoon and then evening. What did I find so appealing about it?

It wasn't the story line, although I did enjoy the grittier, darker elements within it.

It wasn't the historical period; I'm afraid I wouldn't know if Ms.Evans portrayed her world accurately or not simply because I'm not an aficionado of that time period.

It wasn't the style of her writing, although I certainly enjoyed it and going back over sections of it (after I finished it) to analyse how she constructed various scenes.

Quite simply, it was the characters. They engaged me.

The Lord of Wicked - Anthony Craven - is a true tortured hero. I loved that he wasn't an overbearing alpha character. Without giving away any spoilers, this hero's tormented childhood left him determined not to care about anyone, to hide his emotion from everyone and to ease the pain of his past through the pursuit of pleasure rather than love. No emotion, no connection, no advantage given.

He was taught that to show any of the softer emotions was a weakness. So, watching his transformation from a hard, cold, almost ruthless rake into one who recognises that love strengthens instead of weakens was an experience that, as a reader, left me very satisfied. It was extremely well done and entirely believable.

I also found Miss Melissa Goodly a refreshing heroine, not quite what I expected in an historical heroine (you can probably blame my ignorance and instinctive stereotypical mind-set for that). She's a woman of strong convictions, opinionated, worldly-wise in some ways and innocent in others, passionate and vulnerable without being over the top. A lovely balance of conflicting qualities.

Phillip Drake is the quintessential villain. You were pretty much rooting for his demise from the first scene you witnessed him in. What I found fascinating about him was his past. I kept wanting to know what made this man like he was. Again without giving away any spoilers, Evans' explains this in snippets throughout the book. The tie between the hero and the villain deepens the connection I felt for these characters - good, bad and ugly.

The way she explained what made each man who he is left me thinking about how the events of our pasts shape what we are now and how we act or conduct ourselves, and this was especially true of Craven and Drake.

I put down the book knowing that I'd just spent several hours reading something that left me feeling satisfied and entertained.

Everything a good book should do.
