ALLEGIANCE SWORN is an ARRAwards finalist!

I woke to some awesome news this morning!

Sitting in my inbox was an email from the Australian Romance Readers Association letting me know that ALLEGIANCE SWORN is an ARRAwards finalist in the following categories:
  • Favourite Sci-Fi, Fantasy or Futuristic Romance
  • Favourite Cover from a romance published in 2013 (hats off to Gene Mollica, the cover artist, & the Berkley art department for such great work!)

I'm so thrilled, especially on seeing the finalists lists on the ARRA blog - wow, am I in some fantastic company! Scrolling through them, I kept ticking off the ones I'd read and enjoyed. So many wonderful stories and authors!

And I'm tickled to pieces that my writing buddies Bec McMaster and Dakota Harrison are also nominated for a selection of ARRAwards! Woohoo!

Now, it's a waiting game - winners will be announced at the ARRAwards Dinner to be held on 22 March 2014 at Cello’s Restaurant in Sydney.

GUEST AUTHOR: S.E.Gilchrist

I first met S.E.Gilchrist at a Romance Writers of Australia conference many years ago, and it was then we discovered a shared love of all things paranormal, and that we liked to read many of the same authors.

Today it's a great pleasure to have her as my guest - please make her feel welcome!

S.E.Gilchrist Bio: My home is in the beautiful Hunter Valley of Australia with vineyards, rivers, tree studded countryside and the Pacific Ocean all at my doorstep. I grew up in a small coastal town in NSW, a fantastic place with the ocean, the lake, the Aussie bush, caves, old mines all offering different ‘worlds’ to explore.

I love traveling, meeting new people and exploring their cultures. I have visited Asia and the US and spent several years traveling around Australia, lived on a cattle station, on the gem fields, beside the ocean, camped beside mountain streams and under the stars in the outback – all truly magical experiences.

My dream is to earn a living from my writing and be in a position to travel once more.

My writing passion is in the romance genres of sci fi / futuristic, fantasy, paranormal, post apocalyptic/dystopian, ancient history and time travel. I love to combine adventure and romance and aspire to give my protagonists a goal worth fighting for. And I really enjoy giving them a hell of a lot of problems along the way! Adventure – exploring new worlds, battling aliens, dueling with medieval warriors, vanquishing demons, weathering the storms and embracing the joys of challenging relationships.

My other interests are : the environment, science/new technology, animal welfare, mythology, kayaking and bush walking.

I am a member of the RWA of Australia, Romance Writers of New Zealand,  Darksiders Down Under Blog, Hunter Romance Writers, Hot-Down Under anthology writers and RWAmerica, the SF Brigade, Savvy Authors.

When the colonists are betrayed and sold, Alana’s mission is re-defined. Nothing will stop her from keeping those in her care safe and finding a passage home. But her new captor is nothing like she expects…

Commander Tarak El Rajan is human, male and equally determined to retain his payload. With his race on the brink of extinction he is under strict orders to transport all females to the planet Isla for research purposes.
In a world of uncertainty, where the wrong decision could mean the death of an entire race, the last thing either of these two soldiers expects or needs is to fall in love.

Scene you would never cut -
Alana swallowed hard on the bile which burned her throat. She was proud her voice did not quaver when she continued, “And Commander Tarak, does he know too?”
Surprise widened Atolo’s eyes. “Of course. Now we must hurry.” He waved the warrior away. “I am eager to begin. This section here, we have some interesting specimens of our earlier research. Up ahead we have preserved the results of our experiments in more recent years. As you can see, we had almost reached a stage of achieving an actual embryo. Almost but not quite.”
He grabbed her hand and pulled her along. Alana shook her head in violent denial, refusing to accept his words. She saw his mouth moving as he gesticulated with pride at the tiny vulnerable life forms curled up in the familiar foetal position in their lonely tube coffins.
Her body spasmed.
A shudder so profound it almost felled her to the ground wracked through her. The monster’s voice had receded to a thin drone in the background. Alana heard nothing through the roar in her ears. She could barely see as she stretched out a trembling hand and touched the uncaring metal. A bitter wave of revulsion shook her to her core and she struggled for air.
And Tarak knew of this?  Could this be the secret her lover had kept from her? That plus the knowledge her friends and herself were destined for these horrendous research chambers? She thought back over all the times she had sensed he had held something back, something of vital importance. She recalled the eerie atmosphere pervading the Darkons’ city, the grim almost despairing auras that clung to Tarak and his warriors. Deep inside amid the cauldron of horror, doubt and remembered grief, murderous thoughts poisoned her mind.
She jerked her hand from her jailor, lurched to the side and vomited.
Over and over until nothing remained but hollowness.
Emptiness.
She scrubbed at the tears on her face and retched again. She knew she would carry the image of a frail shrivelled body until the end of her days.
Her eyelids were as heavy if they were weighted with bricks and her body felt as if lead was in her veins. She shuddered and realised she huddled on the icy floor. The faint sounds of whimpering were coming from her own throat.
So cold, she was sure she would never be warm again. Her movements slow and jerky her hands scrubbed at her face. She wiped her sleeve under her dripping nose. Only one thing mattered now. Her mouth hardened into a thin line as her brain kicked back into gear.
I’ll kill them.
All of them.
Every last Darkon.

And she would save Commander Tarak for last.

Something your heroine would never do or say – Alana would never turn her back on anyone who needed her. She’d also never sing, as she sounds like a drowning cat.

What do you think the readers will like about LEGEND BEYOND THE STARS?
The love story. I hope readers will find emotionally fulfilling Alana and Tarak’s romance. Both Alana and Tarak have to wrestle with duty, their responsibilities for others and the knowledge they need to sacrifice what they hold dear if they should reach out and take this chance at happiness.

There’s action and adventure in this story plus the underlining thread is a war raging in the background and a villain who has yet to be conquered.

What themes or tropes appear in the book?
Sacrifice, protection, responsibility for others. Greed and desperation.

What's the most fascinating aspect about writing in the science fiction romance genre for you?
Definitely the ability to create entire worlds with new rules, laws, cultures and religions. Power! Give me more power!

Which authors have inspired you in your own writing?
Wow, too many: Elizabeth Peters, Denise Rosetti, Linnea Sinclair, Angela Knight, Karen Marie Moning, John Birmingham, Agatha Christie, Georgette Heyer, Matthew Reilly, JRR Tolkien, Betty Neels, Karen Hawkins, JD Robb, Johann Lindsey etc.

Is there anything else about LEGEND BEYOND THE STARS that you'd like to share?
*Legend has a quirky little side-kick, an alien called Norman who ends up a close and important friend to Alana.
*The need for the colonists to leave Earth for example is because climate change has wrecked havoc on our resources and war has erupted on all borders as people become desperate for the basic necessities of life.
*There’s also some gritty realism in this story. Just like in our reality, people make unpleasant decisions; some with terrible consequences. And not everyone gets their HEA.

*And I’d like to finish with a mention for a hot, short story called THE PORTAL. It's a tale set in the same world as Legend and was released on 1st March by Escape Publishing.

THE PORTAL
When Janni, a young salvager, boards a space wreck, she is caught for daring to steal Darkon tech by a patroller and the one man she had thought never to see again. Several months ago she had allowed him to slip past her defences for a brief and wonderful interlude. But with both of them on either sides of the law, they had walked away. Now they are trapped on a wreck and with an alien life-force hunting them. Will the patroller save her or abandon Janni to her fate?

Kylie, thank you so much for hosting me on your site today. Its been wonderful!

And this assignment’s personal: Dragonfly murdered her closest friend, and she’s in no mood to show him mercy. Even getting stuck with the partner from hell—Malachite, her sociopathic ex-lover and the Empire’s most dangerous agent—can’t dampen her relish for the kill.
With Carrie’s expert weapons skills and penchant for cracking codes, insinuating herself into Dragonfly’s confidence should be easy. But is he the ruthless killer she was led to believe? Or has her precious Empire deceived her? With Malachite watching her every move, the slightest flinch in loyalty means death.

Reasons Why You Never Want to Make an Author Mad

I'm a regular reader of the Supernatural Underground blog and last year an article written by Karina Cooper caught my eye, and had me giggling uncontrollably because I could so relate to the post.

I emailed her and asked permission to share her post here on my blog as I know some of you will appreciate it as much as I did. Without further ado, here it is...

Reasons Why You Never Want to Make an Author Mad*
by Karina Cooper

Come on, you've seen us. We're all very lovely people, us authors. We smile at the cameras, sign books, hug fans, and so on. Surely, making an author mad must be akin to swatting at a dust bunny, right? I mean, what are we going to do? Cry into our keyboards?

Well. Sort of.

See, yesterday I found myself in the middle of a task that I do actually need for this current run of books I'm plotting. And as I scrolled through pages and pages of data, I thought to myself, Karina, it's a damn good thing your profession is what it is.

Because how else am I to explain why my internet history is full of information on modern day torture techniques?

That's right. Let's talk about reason number one: We know how make you scream. We've researched it down to the last details—certainly not for ourselves, oh, no, but what out characters know, we know. And if we're carrying around a character who is an inquisitor, or a character who was tortured, or worse, we know.

Would we use it? Oh, of course not, officer! We'd never use this information for evil. We're entertainers, not in the business of making the things we know actually happen. Right?

Heh. Heh heh. Right.

Reason number two to avoid making us angry? We know how to hide the body. We've thoroughly researched it. Currents, erosion, garbage truck route details, you name it, we know it. We're a little obsessive when it comes to details, you might have noticed. After all, how else can we guarantee that the extra we offed in chapter 4 doesn't come to light until chapter 15?

The devil is, in fact, in the details.

And speaking of details, let's talk about reason number three: we know things about weapons even the movies get wrong. In that obsession with details, we'll travel all over the information highway to get the facts.

Which means we know what kind of weapons a SEAL carries, we know which weapons jam underwater and which can fire in below freezing temperatures. We know which bullets will turn your brain into so much pink mist and which will leave a neat little exit wound, and which sniper rifle will make this easy.

We know about ninja stars, and the different kinds of knives. We know which guns have suppressors and which can be made to have suppressors, and that the potato suppressor doesn't actually work.
Oh, and I certainly don't mean we'd use these tidbits of terminal information on you! I mean characters, of course! We know how to kill characters. As I said, we're in the habit of making up stories, not in shaping reality. Rest easy, dear reader.

Unless, of course, you'd like to make us mad...?

Which brings us to reason number four: Odds are, we have fans in the police department. No joke! If it's not the boys in blue who love us, it's the women. Or the wives. Regardless of who or how, the reality is, we have people who would love to give us alibis.

Wouldn't any of you give me an alibi if I rang you up one day? "Hey, listen, I'll make a character of your choice and thank you in the acknowledgements if you just tell these nice people where I was yesterday. You know, at your house. Watching Friends. And eating cheddar cheese."

Then there's reason number five: You remember school, when there'd be this rumor going around about "that girl" who did this one horribly embarrassing thing, and you knew—just knew—that everyone was talking about you?

Imagine having a character based on you. A character who reveals all your secrets—or makes them up. A character who is murdered in the most grisly way. Or a character who survives, but gets exactly what he or she deserves?

Yeah. In our worlds, baby, we're the gods. And we will talk about you in our godly land of godliness.

You don't want that, do you?

So there you are. Five very good reasons not to piss off your favorite authors. Or even your not so favorite authors. They're really logical, aren't they? I mean, can't you just see the gorgeous Vicki Petersson cackling with glee as she comes up with creative ways to use a coin slot machine and a pair of dice to off somebody?

Or the fabulous Eve Silver, coming up with a viable scientific theory as to how a contagion plague could be released just at a certain point for maximum efficacy?
Let's not discount Merrie Destefano, who knows all the good places in New Orleans to hide a body, or Joss Ware, who knows seventeen ways to dismember a man beyond recognition.

Juliana Stone knows what kind of wounds look like animal attacks—"I have no idea, officer, it looks like a jaguar attack to me."—and Pamela Palmer who is an engineer, and you know how devilishly clever engineers are. I wouldn't mess with her with a twenty-foot pole and a getaway driver on speed dial.

Ahhh, authors. So innocent, and yet...

Mwahaha.

* Note: This post is entirely tongue-in-cheek and not actually a commentary on the likelihood of authors to commit heinous crimes against real, living people. This is a joke. A post devoted to the rather hilarious fact that we tend to research the most horrible things in our bid to get it right.

Murder is bad, mmkay?
Karina's Bio: Born from the genetic mash-up of lesser royalty, storytellers, wanderers, and dreamers, Karina Cooper was destined to be a creative genius. As a child, she moved all over the country like some kind of waifish blond gypsy and thrived in the new cultures her family settled in. When she (finally) grew up, she skipped the whole genius part and fell in love with writing because, really, who doesn't love making things up for a living?

One part romance fanatic, one part total dork, and all imagination, she writes dark and sexy paranormal romance and historical urban fantasy. When she isn't writing, Karina is an airship captain's wife and Steampunk fashionista. She lives in the beautiful and rainy Pacific Northwest with a husband, four cats, two rabbits, the fantasy of a dog, and a passel of adopted gamer geeks.

SERIES: The Paranormal DownUnder - Mel Teshco

In Australia, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. What better way to celebrate this than by finding a new-to-you author or revisiting a favorite one?

This series of blog posts, entitled The Paranormal DownUnder, aims to do just that!

Any of my regular readers know I'm passionate about introducing 'local' talent (aka authors from Australia & New Zealand). This time around I'm keen to feature those who write in this genre.

So, be prepared for a swag of authors & some blatant promotion of their books as they share their thoughts on the paranormal genre and why they find it so compelling.

Please welcome my next guest...Mel Teshco.

Mel Teshco grew up in Australia, where her seemingly gypsy dad and ever patient mother saw her living in many areas of the East Coast, along with her sister and two brothers.

Each new home stimulated an already over-active imagination, where she spent as much time dreaming about fantasy worlds as the real world - the fantasy sometimes being much better.

Now living on a small rural property with three horses and a handful or two of cats, she is happily married with three children of wide-spread ages and loves writing gritty, sizzling paranormals and the occasional contemporary with darker tones.

You can find her at her website. And at her blog.

What compels you to write in the paranormal/sci-fi genre?
I find the world building so liberating–no rules or restrictions—and the hero’s tend to be alpha, the heroine’s strong, often kick-ass. Plus there are SO many variables to writing your own rules and your own world, which I’ve found especially true in my alien sci-fi series (especially on the alien’s planet.)

These genres are also what I’m drawn to read, so it’d be silly not to write what I love to read.

Is there something you'd like to write but have yet to attempt?
I really want to write a YA story. I’m hoping that will be next year’s ambition =)

Who are auto-buys for you in this genre? What makes their books so appealing to you?
I haven’t read near enough authors – so many are on my ‘to be read’ list, but I’m a bit of a fan of JR Ward, Kelley Armstrong, Kresley Cole and our own Keri Arthur. And then we've got our home grown talent, like my CP's Tracey O'Hara and Kylie Scott - and we can't go past Kylie Griffin either =)

SERIES: The Paranormal DownUnder - Tracey O'Hara

In Australia, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. What better way to celebrate this than by finding a new-to-you author or revisiting a favorite one?

This series of blog posts, entitled The Paranormal DownUnder, aims to do just that!

Any of my regular readers know I'm passionate about introducing 'local' talent (aka authors from Australia & New Zealand). This time around I'm keen to feature those who write in this genre.

So, be prepared for a swag of authors & some blatant promotion of their books as they share their thoughts on the paranormal genre and why they find it so compelling.

Please welcome my next guest...Tracey O'Hara.

Tracey's Bio: I was born in Australia - Launceston, Tasmania (Australia) to be precise, but actually grew up in North and Far North Queensland. My family is very supportive of my writing. They encourage me to keep writing and pursuing my dream.

I discovered a passion for writing in March 2004. It started after doing some research into my family history. A story came into my head, screaming to get out, about an Irish girl who works for an English captain as a governess/nanny for his children while their mother is very ill. Set in Australia in the early 1820s.

But as I started to plot the story, another one emerged, which was much stronger. It involved the sister of the girl in the first story, who gets raped on the voyage out to Australia and falls pregnant. I wrote 120k in about 4 months – the story flowed out like molasses on a hot day.

This was before I learnt anything about writing, and I followed every bad writing practice known, making every writing mistake. But everyone loved the story – even if it was badly written. So I figured that I am more a story teller than a writer – so now I must learn to write. Now I am writing Dark stories, Dark Urban Fantasy to be precise.

What compels you to write in the paranormal genre?
I love the richness of world building that writing paranormal allows me.  I can put so much more into my stories.

My books have mystery, thriller, romance, contemporary fantasy and a little horror. It is so call to fit all that into a story. I can write dark, which I love. I can also write sexy.

My first book NIGHT'S COLD KISS was nominated for best Horror in the Aurealis Awards and the RWA Romantic Book of the Year (Romantic Elements category), that was the coolest thing ever. My second book made the long list of the Sister's in Crime Davitt Award which was also amazing.

Is there something you'd like to write but have yet to attempt?
Science Fiction. I love it. I watch it and I read some of it. But I have yet to write it. Sometimes I just don't think I am smart enough to write sci-fi but I will give it a go someday.

Who are auto-buys for you in this genre? What makes their books so appealing to you?
At the moment I am reading outside my own genre. Or should I say listening. I have discovered audiobooks and adore them. But I guess if I had to say it would have to be Keri Arthur because my mum is a huge fan and Keri tells a darn good story.

I would have said J.R.Ward but have found the last couple of books hard to get through. And of course there is the ever lovely Nalini Singh. Also there is a new writer on the scene - you may know her - Kylie Griffin. I haven't read her yet but her stories are really taking off.

Tracey's latest release from Harper Voyager:

SIN'S DARK CARESS
(released August 1st, 2012)

An ancient darkness has risen from the ashes . . . and terror has been loosed upon an unsuspecting world.

Forensic witch Bianca Sin has never seen anything like it: homeless teenage girls torn to pieces by dark magic in the cold shadows of the city. More terrifying still is the symbol written in blood on an alley wall—the unmistakable seal of the Dark Brethren.

Teaming up with NYPD homicide detective Lancelot McManus and an elite task force headed by the shapeshifter Oberon DuPrie, Bianca knows her worst fears have finally come to pass. A new war of annihilation is looming that will plunge the worlds of vampire, shapeshifter, and human into chaos—and two adversarial tribes locked in uneasy truce will need to take up arms together to save the children. Trust will be essential for Sin and McManus, as the hunt forces them to confront their deepest terrors.

For the ultimate evil is no longer approaching.

It's here.

You can find out more about Tracey on her website!

SERIES: The Paranormal DownUnder - Emily Gee

In Australia, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. What better way to celebrate this than by finding a new-to-you author or revisiting a favorite one?

This series of blog posts, entitled The Paranormal DownUnder, aims to do just that!

Any of my regular readers know I'm passionate about introducing 'local' talent (aka authors from Australia & New Zealand). This time around I'm keen to feature those who write in this genre.

So, be prepared for a swag of authors & some blatant promotion of their books as they share their thoughts on the paranormal genre and why they find it so compelling.

Please welcome my next guest...Emily Gee.

Emily grew up in a house full of words and books: her mother worked as a librarian and a proof-reader, and her father was a writer.

She had no intention of becoming a writer. Ever. But since getting a science degree, she's spent several years travelling and working overseas, and one day was sitting on a bus in Syria, with the desert stretching in all directions, and she thought, What if...and since then has written manuscript after manuscript.

Emily's been a rehabilitation instructor, a library assistant, a postie, a waitress on the Isle of Skye, and even (briefly) a field assistant in Antarctica. She love to travel and has lived in Sweden, backpacked in Europe, and journeyed overland in the Middle East, China, and North Africa. Most recently she's lived in Marlborough, New Zealand and works in the wine industry.

You can visit her website to find out more about her and her alter-ego, Emily May, who writes historical regency romance.

What compels you to write in the fantasy and regency romance genres?
I've loved fantasy novels since being introduced to them as a child (my father wrote children's fantasy novels and read them to us chapter by chapter as they came from his pen) and I've adored regencies since the very first Georgette Heyer I read as a teen. I guess you could say that I write the genres I enjoy reading.

Is there something you'd like to write but have yet to attempt?
Funny you should ask that, Kylie. I've been wanting to write a regency with magic in it for some time now (what sub-genre is that ... regency paranormal?) and I'm making a stab at it this year. So far, it's loads of fun!

Who are auto-buys for you? What makes their books so appealing to you?
Lois McMaster Bujold, because she builds such great worlds and writes so well. I'm a huge fan of her Vorkosigan novels, which are intelligent, complex, and funny.

Diana Wynne Jones, for her imagination and use of language. I love, love, love her Chrestomanci novels for children/young adults. Alas, she died last year, so there'll be no new ones.

My third auto-buy is Jennifer Crusie, because she's so funny and smart and uses English so well. I love the way her mind works!

THE SENTINEL MAGE

Her magic may be the only thing that can save a prince-and the Seven Kingdoms.

In a distant corner of the Seven Kingdoms, an ancient curse festers and grows, consuming everything in its path. Only one man can break it: Harkeld of Osgaard, a prince with mage's blood in his veins. But Prince Harkeld has a bounty on his head-and assassins at his heels.

Innis is a gifted shapeshifter. Now she must do the forbidden: become a man. She must stand at Prince Harkeld's side as his armsman, protecting and deceiving him.

But the deserts of Masse are more dangerous than the assassins hunting the prince. The curse has woken deadly creatures, and the magic Prince Harkeld loathes may be the only thing standing between him and death.

SERIES: The Paranormal DownUnder - Christina Ashcroft

In Australia, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. What better way to celebrate this than by finding a new-to-you author or revisiting a favorite one?

This series of blog posts, entitled The Paranormal DownUnder, aims to do just that!

Any of my regular readers know I'm passionate about introducing 'local' talent (aka authors from Australia & New Zealand). This time around I'm keen to feature those who write in this genre.

So, be prepared for a swag of authors & some blatant promotion of their books as they share their thoughts on the paranormal genre and why they find it so compelling.

Please welcome my next guest...Christina Ashcroft.

Christina Ashcroft is an ex-pat Brit who now lives in Western Australia with her high school sweetheart, their three children, an eccentric Maltese-cross and three regal cats. She can’t remember a time when she didn’t write, and always managed to include an element of fantasy or the paranormal in her English essay homework. Luckily her English teachers didn’t mind, despite the fact these stories generally finished with the hero, heroine (or both) coming to a sticky end. Thankfully by the time she hit fourteen she discovered romance novels and the wonder of a Happily Ever After. She now writes about hot archangels and the women who capture their hearts for Penguin/Berkley Heat and her books always have a happily-ever-after.

Christina is a member of the Romance Writers of Australia, Romance Writers of America, the Dark Side Down Under group blog and the Historical Hearts blog. She is a contest judge for RWAm, RWAus and RWNZ. She was a member of the inaugural Professional Development for Authors team and has been part of the editorial team for the Romance Writers of Australia’s monthly newsletter, Hearts Talk.

What compels you to write in the paranormal genre?
I've always written stories that had a touch of the paranormal. Even when I was at school there was always an element of the strange in my English homework. Not that I ever thought it was strange, because in my mind it's all perfectly normal!!

It makes much more sense to me that there are otherworldly creatures among us, as well as among the stars, than the idea we're totally alone in the universe. Just because we can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist! And so writing about gods and goddesses, angels, demons and vampires feels very logical and sane to me :-)

Is there something you'd like to write but have yet to attempt?
Not that I can think of off the top of my head. I've written about all the fantastical beings that fascinate me, even if all those books haven't been published yet. I do have a couple of time travel romances I'd love to sell one day.

Who are auto-buys for you in this genre? What makes their books so appealing to you?
So many books and so little time! I don't even know where to start. I'm so behind in my reading, my tbr piles (both physical and digital) threaten to tumble at any second.

One series I've been looking forward to reading for ages is Joss Ware's The Envy Chronicles. I hope to emerge from my cave for long enough to devour the whole series in one go!

Archangel of Mercy (December 2012) ~ writing as Christina Ashcroft

Between an angel and a desperate woman comes salvation - and a raw passion that challenges them at every turn...
When Aurora Robinson attempts to open a rift between dimensions to embrace her true heritage, an arrogant Archangel is the only one who can save her from the jaws of hell. And while she owes Gabriel her life, she’s determined not to fall at his feet-despite the desire she feels whenever they’re together.
After his wings were brutally destroyed millennia ago, Gabriel has no compassion for humans like those who ruined him and betrayed the ones he loved. But when he inexplicably finds himself defying ancient protocols to rescue a woman from a fate worse than death, he is shocked by the searing attraction he feels for a mortal.
As the ancient forces that seek to punish Aurora for her actions close in, Gabriel offers the tempting woman protection at his private sanctuary. But as they both succumb to their desires, they discover an even deeper connection-one that threatens to consume them.

SERIES: The Paranormal DownUnder - Maree Anderson

In Australia, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. What better way to celebrate this than by finding a new-to-you author or revisiting a favorite one?

This series of blog posts, entitled The Paranormal DownUnder, aims to do just that!

Any of my regular readers know I'm passionate about introducing 'local' talent (aka authors from Australia & New Zealand). This time around I'm keen to feature those who write in this genre.

So, be prepared for a swag of authors & some blatant promotion of their books as they share their thoughts on the paranormal genre and why they find it so compelling.

Please welcome this week's guest...

Maree Anderson is an award-winning author who writes paranormal romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and young adult books. She's a Kiwi, a New Zealander, and she's addicted to chocolate -- the darker the better. Not to mention coffee, and the occasional glass of excellent NZ wine. She's not quite so addicted to her local gym -- she'd much rather do an hour's karate class and go Ceroc dancing than pound the treadmill.

She shares her home with a neurotic cat who likes to bring in the neighbour's dog's bones, and a depressed goldfish who likes to scare her by lying at the bottom of the fish-tank and playing dead.

To date Maree has published three novellas, six novels, and one young adult novel. She's currently working on the sequel to her multi-award-winning YA featuring a teenage cyborg heroine, Freaks of Greenfield High.

For reviews and excerpts of Maree's books, please visit the BOOKS page of
her website.

What compels you to write in the paranormal genre?
My imagination and thought processes are naturally skewed toward paranormal/fantasy. I've tried re-ee-ally hard to write a "straight" story but somehow it never turns out the way I intended.

My attempt at a Regency romance, for example, turned into an alternate-world historical fantasy (with a virgin hero raised in a fanatically religious world where chastity is prized, who woke up one morning to find himself exuding pheromones that made him irresistible to women).

And my contemporary category story about a lawyer and a secretary, turned into a story about an architect and an interior designer who was unaware she was a part-time cat shifter. Go figure. So I guess for me, the lure of the impossible is too great and it's easier to embrace my warped, twisty-turny imagination and just run with it.

Is there something you'd like to write but have yet to attempt?
Ummm.... the aforementioned straight contemporary story with no paranormal or fantasy aspect whatsoever? Seriously, one day I would like to write a really gritty urban fantasy series a la Lilith Saintcrow, Devon Monk, or Karen Marie Moning.

Who are auto-buys for you in this genre? What makes their books so appealing to you?
Nalini Singh, Lilith Saintcrow, Rachel Caine, Sarah Rees Brennan, Holly Black, Ilona Andrews.... the list goes on and on and on!

I think for me the main appeal is the skill with which my favourite authors maintain an ongoing series so it's always fresh and exciting, even if the "world" and the characters are already established. With Nalini's Psy-Changeling books, for example, I love the way my favourite characters from previous books are interwoven into subsequent books in the series so I can catch up with how they're doing, and that there's an ongoing thread throughout the books hinging around the identity of the Ghost.

Lilith Saintcrow's Dante Valentine and Jill Kismet series focussed one heroine throughout the entire series, which meant I could follow the heroine's growth, the way she changed, her relationships with the other characters, over the course of 5 or 6 books before the series ended.

Bottom line? I love reading series! Each time a new book in a series I'm collecting comes out, I will invariably hold off reading the latest book, and re-read the entire series before indulging in my latest purchase. Bliss!

Upcoming New Releases

This year is a busy one for debut Aussie authors, and I'm very excited because many of them are personal friends.

I'd like to share with you what's coming out later this year. I'm hankering to read them, so their release dates can't come fast enough. Watch out for them!

First, Bec McMaster and KISS OF STEEL (London Steampunk series)! It releases with Sourcebooks on September 1st 2012.

It's already garnering early rave reviews (you can check out some of them on Goodreads).

He craves her like no other…
Honoria Todd has no choice. Only in the dreaded Whitechapel district can she escape the long reach of the Duke of Vickers. But seeking refuge there will put her straight into the hands of Blade, legendary master of the rookeries. No one would dare cross him, but what price would he demand to keep her safe?
Ever since Vickers infected him with the craving, Blade has been quicker, stronger, almost immortal—and terrified of losing control of the monster within. Honoria could be his perfect revenge against the duke…or the salvation he never dared to dream of.

Next, Kylie Scott and FLESH, her post-apocalyptic, zombie infested romance (coming out October 1st 2012 with Momentum Books)!

When the plague hit, her neighbours turned into mindless, hungry, homicidal maniacs.
Daniel has been a loner his entire life. Then the world empties and he realises that being alone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Finn is a former cop who is desperate for companionship, and willing to do anything it takes to protect the survivors around him.
When the three cross paths they band together; sparks fly, romance blooms in the wasteland and Ali, Daniel and Finn bend to their very human needs in the ruins of civilisation.
Lust, love and trust all come under fire in Flesh as the three band together to survive, hunted through the suburban wastelands.
Eleni Konstantine has a couple of releases coming up - some short stories and a novella!
ENCHANTED REALMS (Stormy Divide & Angel Eyes) comes out June 29th, 2012 from Musa Publishing.
ENCHANTED REALMS
STORMY DIVIDE
Thom may be used to the dangers of the forest, but nothing has prepared him for this. When he stumbles across a woman dressed in weird clothing lying on the ground during a storm, he has no choice but to help her. Ellie finds herself in another world, having travelled through time and space thanks to what Thom calls The Rifts. The question is whether she will ever be able to find her way back, or if she will be stuck in this new world forever. Or if she will even want to go home…
ANGEL EYES
Vera’s dreams are haunted each night by a man she only knows as Angel Eyes. He feels more real to her than anything else in her life, including her fiancé. Vera must try to forget her childish dreams of soul mates and happily ever after… but are they really only dreams or can she find a way to be with Angel Eyes forever?

Her novella GATEWAY TO HELL  is out on September 7th, 2012 from Musa Publishing.

Mastering a unique power was much safer for Zeta Kosmos with a mentor to help her along. Now that he’s disappeared, Zeta must continue alone with her calling—closing Gateways to Hell.
Daniel Richards is in the family business—Warding supernatural evil from causing havoc on humans. As such, he’s only interested in the safety of one-night stands. Until Zeta. This bad boy now wants a long, lasting relationship.

But Zeta can’t let go of her past, nor can she ignore the secret demonic threats against Daniel’s life. She’d rather fight demonic spawn and be dragged into Hell than allow anything happen to him. Can Daniel convince her to stay? Will she have to pay the ultimate price?

Who knows, you may find a new to you author from this bunch!

SERIES: The Paranormal DownUnder - Louise Cusack

In Australia, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. What better way to celebrate this than by finding a new-to-you author or revisiting a favorite one?

Please welcome my first guest...

You can find Louise on her website and follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads.

Louise, what compels you to write in the paranormal genre?
Since I first read ALICE IN WONDERLAND as a child I’ve been hooked on stranger in a strange land stories: novels like Frank Herbert’s DUNE, Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom series (recently made into the movie John Carter), Robert Heinlein’s STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, Ursula le Guin’s LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS and Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series – all stories about a person who travels from one world into another.

That also seems to be the theme of my own work, and I’ve written fantasy worlds, contemporary fairytale, erotica and lost world adventures, but always it involves someone from our world going into a new world, or visa versa.

Is there something you'd like to write but have yet to attempt?
I’d love to write sci fi, but to me that’s the ‘best of the best’ and I’d like to give myself another decade of writing (I’ve already been writing for 2 decades) before I feel good enough to do it justice.

I grew up reading all the classics, Asimov, Heinlein, Arthur C Clarke,  Bradbury, EE ‘Doc’ Smith, Simak, Wyndham and Pohl among others – borrowing them from my older brother’s bookcase and reading them under the mozzie net at night with a torch. Those books were beyond good, and they set the bar pretty high for me. I want to do them justice if I try to step into that arena myself.

Who are auto-buys for you in this genre? What makes their books so appealing to you?
Cassandra Clare.  I am totally smitten with the character of Will Herondale.  He’s so broken and so beautiful.  It’s really masterful writing.  And the Victorian setting is so evocative.  As a result, I’m keen for book three of The Infernal Devices series to arrive.

Suzanne Collins is the other standout for me in recent years.  I love the characters in The Hunger Games, Katniss’s strength and compassion, and the way she makes Peeta and Gale appealing in different ways, so the reader finds it hard to stick in one camp.

Guess I’m a sucker for a good love triangle!

Louise's Shadow Through Time series:

Book One: DESTINY OF THE LIGHT
Ennae is a parallel world joined to our own world by the Sacred Pool, a portal that can only be opened by one with the Guardian blood running through their veins. It is through this watery gateway that Khatrene leaves her modern-day life behind forever, drawn into a quest that will take her into the depths of the unknown.

Khatrene must fulfil her destiny as The Light, the woman whose child will unite the four elemental worlds. At each turn are real and imagined enemies who will do everything in their power to prevent her from fulfilling the prophecy, including the ethereal and erotic shadow woman, the enigmatic tattooed man, even her beloved brother Mihale.

Talis, her appointed Guardian, must help her through the dangerous terrain of Ennae, sacrificing everything to ensure her safety in a land where magic prevails and nothing is as it seems.
