Who's that girl? Interview - Julieann Thomas

We have another Kiwi visiting!

Name? Julieann Thomas.

Where are you? Wellington, New Zealand.

How many years have you been a member of RWNZ? Three years.

What genre do you write? Military Romance (though I'm itching to write a military paranormal romance novel).

Who are your favourite authors?
  • Nalini Singh
  • J.R. Ward
  • Suzanne Brockmann
  • Stephanie Tyler
  • Merline Lovelace
  • Jo Davis
  • Jill Shalvis
What inspired you to write romance? Ever since my aunt introduced me to romance novels at the age of 14, I've been in love with the genre. But I never thought about writing one until I was laid up for two months after a knee operation four years ago.

My husband went out and bought me a military romance novel to read to pass the time and I was so disappointed in the storyline that I told him that I could write a better one myself, and so that's what I did (or at least what I thought I did). It was satisfying to finally use my overactive imagination for something productive.

And as for military romance, my love for the military came from my family: my grandfather served in the Air Force in World War II, and my dad served in the Navy. My love for Navy SEALs in particular came from watching the movie "Navy SEALs" with my dad when I was a teenager. I've been obsessed with Navy SEALs and other Special Operations troops ever since.

Who's your dream publisher? HQN or the Forever imprint of Grand Central Publishing.

What's the best thing about going to conference? Meeting fellow writers who understand and support my drive to write romance novels. I have made so many friends by going along to conference and many of them have helped me along with my career, especially the ones who push me to do stuff I don't want to do, but should.

And lastly, finish these statements...
My greatest strength as a writer is...
research. Luckily my background in science has helped me to easily research the technical details I need to write military romance.
A sexy hero needs...to know what he wants and go after it (especially where the heroine is concerned)
My latest WIP (work in progress) is about...a Navy SEAL who meets the woman of his dreams in the war zone of Afghanistan. It's a pity that she wants nothing to do with him because she thinks he's a player.
When I write I like to...kick my cats out of my office and put on some music to write to.
My best writing milestone to date is...finishing my first novel (well hopefully by the time you read this).

Julieann, thanks for participating! If anyone would like to check out any of Julieann's hot military guys, head on over to her blog, or website. You can also follow her on Twitter.

  2. Hi Nas,

it's great to meet you. There are a lot of great military romance authors out there so my advice is just to try one and see how it goes.

If you pop past my blog you'll notice I have a weakness for men in uniform.

  5. Nice idea to profile the lovely Julieann Thomas, Kylie. She's been a great help to me as I develop a SEAL hero of my own!

  6. Nothing like a good brainstorming session, Cate! Bouncing ideas around with a friend helps spark others, and when someone knows their research, like Julieann does about her military blokes, phew...you'd be mad not to take advantage of her expertise!

  7. Hi Cate!

Kylie - My favorite military author would have to be Suzanne Brockmann for her Tall, Dark, and Dangerous series featuring Navy SEALs. Even though it was written in the 1990's, the various heroes deep point of views were amazing.
